Qualities of a mentor
Now we have discussed what a mentor is and our best mentor. Let's talk about the qualities of a good mentor. I could make a very long list. What qualities do you think a mentor should possess? I'll start the list with compassion...
I like your idea of making a list. That is hard though because I think it depends on what the mentee is looking for in their mentor. For myself though I would want someone with experience, expertise, kindness, and caring. I would want them to show me the lead when I needed it but to let me act on my own too. I would want them to share advice but to also listen. There are so many qualities and I think they change depending on where you are in life and your career. Thanks for sharing this wonderful topic with our class.
I think a mentor should always act in a way that they feel would compel the other person to act as well. Many times mentors may be great individually, but when one sees how they are outside of the one-on-one instruction, the mentored may feel as if the person isn't who they thought they were. So to add to your list, reliability I feel is something that encompasses this notion.
I have been blessed by having a terrific preceptor/mentor this semester for ENP 3. Having gone from mentoring to being the mentoree I can say her best quality is pushing me past my comfort zone. Giving me the atta boys when called for, and taking me aside and counseling me while TEACHING when needed. She leads be example, and encourages me to be PASSIONATE in my new career path. I am blessed! Great site!
